Drinking Water Treatment Plant Improvement Project Progressing
The Taintor Hill Road Treatment Plant Improvement Project is approximately half way complete. The project, which is being funded through a low interest Drinking Water State Revolving Fund loan, will double the volume of water that can be treated for iron and manganese removal and will provide numerous additional operational controls and treatment efficiencies. Much of the rough reconfiguration of the interior portion of the plant has been completed and workers have moved to the improvements to the aeration tower. One of the improvements is installation of a new clear well and pumping system. The new clearwell stores water after passing through the filter vessels and the aeration tower before being pumped into the distribution system for use by the customers. The new clearwell is sized to provide enough water on
site to perform the filter backwash process without drawing water from the distribution system. Under the current configuration of clearwell and filter vessels, a limited volume of water is available so backwash water must be supplemented by drawing from the distribution system. When this happens, it disrupts system flow and reduces system pressure. Both will be eliminated with the improvements. The project is scheduled for completion in April.
